Almost Got Scammed Big Time

Shadow Shopper - Almost Got Scammed Big Time
Shadow Shopper - Almost Got Scammed Big Time - Image 2

Hi, a week ago I sent my contact form out to Shadow Shopper and two days ago I received a text from a Daniel Beachy. Daniel Beachy informed me that he was my shopper coordinator and that my first shopper assignment has been delivered to me.

He asked me to confirm my schedule for this week so I did. He informed me that I would received a package via USPS with instructions of what I needed to do. Yesterday, I received a package with a check in the amount of $1,980 and instructions of what I needed to do. The first step asked me to deposit the check and then the instructions requested that I buy a bunch of I-tunes and Amazon gift cards no larger than $100 each at different locations.

Out of the $1,980, I would be paid $330.00 and the rest I would purchase the gift cards. Once I purchase the gift cards I would scratch the back of each card and send them a picture of the codes for each card to two email addresses provided. Since all of this sounded fishy to me I contacted the bank in PA where the check came from and when I spoke of one of the Branch Managers he informed me that the check is fraudulent and that I should not deposit it into my bank account. At this moment, I'm heading to the police and reporting this matter to the FBI IC3 Unit.

Daniel Beachy texted me yesterday and asked me did I deposit the check, I said sure, lol, this gang thinks they're smarter than me but I'm a old cat from the hood, lol.

Just beware anyone whose vulnerable can fall for these scams. I am attaching the check and the letter that was sent to me.

I got that same check, left it sitting right on my counter, my son's kept telling me to cash it... I said to them, do you think I'm crazy?

I haven't work, nobody owe me nothing, so who's gonna send me some free money like that... one of them kept saying how real the check look, okay it does look real... but who's issuing out free money?????

I also was told those same instuctions. People please be careful, all money is not good money.

Guest

The picture of the letter says "Secret Shopper", not "Shadow Shopper". Sounds like a different operation, not Shadow Shopper, that tried to rip you off.

Guest

thnx buddy

Didn’t the apostrophe after the treasurer clue anyone? Yes I know subtle but telling.

The difference between a possessive noun and a descriptive verb.

Just saying all the third grade English rules should tip ppl off to the scam. If not a fraction of common sense.

I was a victim of this scam as well. I no longer have that paper with the instructions and I would like to file a police report.

Can you please email me the paper with the list of steps received through mail. My email is francescao@***.com Thank you I would really appreciate it

Guest

just got a check for that same amount, $1980.00, and had forgotten I had applied for this Shadowshoppers job after hearing about it through my college email. I asked a friend and she said it was definitely a scam and the fact that the check is so large, that they recruit by email and the whole buying iTunes and Amazon gift cards thing, this is a scam.

Guest

Same thing happened to me. The check in the amount of $1,994.73 was already alarming.

Then to buy so many gift cards and scratching of the back to reveal the codes, sending pictures of it was even more ridiculous. Also the address of the bank didn't match the actual location of the bank.

Guest

Just joined shadow shopper and through them GigSpot Is it shadow shopper itself or one of the many companies that ripped you off. As I am about to spend 120$ on a mystery shop and will supposedly be tmreimbursed

SHADOW SHOPPER IS A SCAM! RUN!!!!!!!!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

My work email was included in a group email that came from an employee in my company about an opportunity to supplement my income with a job with Shadow Shopper. The email stated this is a legitimate opportunity that the employee had taken advantage of so I clicked the link and signed up.

I received an email confirmation from Shadow Shopper stating I would receive a package delivered by UPS with my first assignment. I also received a text message. A package did arrive but it looked like regular mail and there was a letter and a check inside for $1,900 on PNC Bank with my name on it. I was advised to deposit in my bank account.

RED FLAG THe letter directed me to purchase gift cards and contribute to a charity. RED FLAG. There was nothing listed about observing and shopping at any establishment only purchasing gift cards and sending to Shadow Shopper! RED FLAG.

Oh, the instructions said to contact them once you receive the package, I never did. Shadow Shopper keeps texting asking if I received the package and when am I going to begin the assignment as they are ready to send the next assignment! REALLY! I see this as an attempt to get your personal bank information and have you purchase gift cards and send to them and you are out of $1900.

Not going to happen. Shadow Shopper is a SCAM!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Shadow Shoppers is DEFINITELY a scam . I received an email through my DOE email idk how they were able to do that but I did & thought it was LEGIT because of that .

I did the survey filling out to do the job & waited for what they said would be a “packet” in the mail. I go back to my email & the email is no longer there (making me look crazy , first red flag) I did a lil research for reviews but obviously not enough . Long story short they send you a check & light packet wanting you to go buy gift cards (second red flag) from walmart & fill out a personal check (third red flag , my guess is for your information account & routing) to a Charity to them . Then they say the rest of the money you can keep.

The check looks legit . I looked up the bank and all but my bank said everything about it is FICTITIOUS.

They are unable to verify the bank for funds . SCAM SCAM SCAM , My bank is MCU by the way .BEWAREEEE SHADOW SHOPPERS ARE A SCAM!!

Scams

I wish to be disassociated with your company completely. Upon entering your sphere I have seen the "good" jobs held for paying premium membership. Why?

Then, I received a job offer. 1st one. Cool. Well, not so fast. First, there was no return address...even on an envelope containing a cashier's check for $948? Hmmm...

The check has bounced...yeah ....it's a fraud. A scam. Luckily I did nothing before the "funds" came available and since they did not I got in touch with my bank.

More action is coming, I'm sure, as there are authorities who will be interested in interstate money scams.

Waste of time and energy. They also want your $

This is a scam. They lure you with a text saying make up to $300 per job as a mystery shopper at your favorite restaurants and places to shop.

I went through the entire process and the highest mystery shopper job offered was for a reimbursement of $18. This is after being bombarded with jobs that do not apply to being a mystery shopper at all. About 5% of the jobs listed are for mystery shopping. When I wrote the company and said I was only interested in being a mystery shopper, as the text message advertised, they wrote back asking me to pay money to have my name brought to the top of the list.

They waste your time to the point where you feel you’ve already invested so much you may as well pay the fee to get the job that was originally advertised to you. I have enough time on my hands to let people know this is a scam, false advertising, and a massive waste of time.

Abusive intrusion

Unsubscribe does not work. I even started doing unsubscribe on every single message sent.

It's all a bogus bunch of crap that multiples like rabbits, slows down my getting to important messages, wastes my time, clutters up my device and pretty much has me in tears from receiving a dozen and more daily.

They used deception to make me believe I had worked with them years ago. They need to go away NOW!

Shadow Shopper is OK - read here for more info

I can't speak for Shadow Shopper's member registration policies or paid memberships, but I can say that I work for a legitimate mystery shopping company and regularly post jobs to Shadow Shopper's database. I also occasionally purchase contact information for shoppers in an area that I am trying to assign. It is worthwhile to register with Shadow Shopper as a Bronze member so that you at least have the chance to receive e-mails from folks like me.

As a mystery shopper myself, the best resource that I can recommend is mspa.org. Every company posting there has been vetted by the organization. I have never had an issue accepting assignments from companies posting there.

As a general rule, you should never pay anyone for an opportunity to shop. I personally would not have a paid account on Shadow Shopper, as it is easy to find jobs without their services. The way that they *should* be making money is by having shoppers with free accounts and schedulers paying to contact the shoppers. That's just my 2 cents. Hope this helps!

What do you mean shopper w free accounts &schedulers paying to contact the shopper

Just great, another scammer pointing out a shammer!!!

I went to mspa and it ask for $25 a year. It ask for money to. So I'm confused every where I seem to go is asking for money.

The $25 is for membership, so that you can become certified. You do not need to be certified in order to do mystery shopping.

It does help, though. It is not, at all, mandatory.

Guest

Thank you for your comment. I agree you should not have to pay for a service that makes money off you.

A friend of mine schedules shoppers and it's legite. The company seems to work with banks allot but at least I know it's real.

Guest

I can't join as a gold member, so I have to stay bronze. but they show no jobs in Anacortes, WA where I live or any jobs in my area as a bronze member, but heaps if I was to pay them 4.95..like I would give them my debit card info..yeah right!!! HAH

What is the name of your company? If you can't tell me, then I would say you are in on the (supposed) scam.....

Please note that these were NOT sent out by ShadowShopper, but by a criminal gang fraudulently claiming to be a legitimate enterprise by representing themselves as real companies. Please take a moment to read our Public Service Announcement regarding check scams.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU DEPOSIT THE MONIES THAT WERE SENT. The checks/money orders come back as insufficient funds a number of days later, and your bank will consider you responsible for paying it back.

Tyreon Jfa

I got an email telling me your sending me a check to deposit and then to wire the funds elsewhere this is fishy!!!

Shadow Shopper - Mystery Shopping Membership Review

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Be very careful with this company. I wanted to be a legit mystery shopper as I have worked in the retail grocery industry for 20 years.

So I felt I had a lot to offer as a mystery shopper. I feel it is a scam as well. I never got anywhere with them. Now I feel like my personal info has been compromised.

They get around the legal system just beause of the way they phrase things. Once you pay, you are considered a member. They think they are slick but the BBB has had complaints and I am pretty sure they are being investigated. Notice you can comment on this board without name etc.

All the positive comments are probably from John and Jenna. Good luck and don't do it.

Shadow shopper, Once someone signs up with the paid membership, do they have to go through you for all the mystery jobs registered with you? For example, I am registered with about 20 different mystery shop companies, and a lot of the company's are also on Shadow Shopper.

I noticed though the shopper fees are sometimes higher. I have a good relationship with all of these companies except one. I believe there may be some secretive arrangements with a former landlord my (past) boyfriend and I rented from,I believe there are some underhanded arrangements between a former landlord and the manager of this one company.Other than that I have a good relationship and communication with many of the schedulers. But my question is, would I have to stop dealing directly with these companies and go straight through you?

I do like these companies. And can I cancel the paid membership anytime, I.e if I the work slows down?

About getting 3,000.00 checks, I got that without being signed up. I brought it to the post office, they turned it to the inspector general.

Guest

Wow good thing i just read this comment along with so many more. I am not signing up after reading all this! What s scam!!!!

Guest
reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-1481418

Ditto! They have already blown up my email. Want way too much personal info!

Guest

I'd like to apply with the lady who works as a coordinator of a mystery shopping company. Please contact me at creativelyinvest@***.com

Guest

I would never pay to be part of their database and to access jobs. I worked at a mystery shopping company, not as a shopper but in the actual offices as a coordinator, i.e.

the person who selected shoppers for assignments. I had tens of thousands of "shoppers" who had registered, I would never have needed to access another company's database to find shoppers. If you sign up with legit agencies (those that are not trying to charge you), you will have free access to their available shops.

I cannot justify paying money out to be a shopper. You are suppose to be the one getting paid.
